On my Rollstar order form, what does “Tight opening” mean?
The tight opening is simply the width of the window opening.
If a Rollstar shade is made the same width as the window opening, the shade will not fit in the opening. Because of this, we deduct 1/8" from the tight opening for shades up to 120", and 1/4" for shades over 120", to arrive at the shade width. This clearance ensures that the shade fits within the window opening and can be moved up and down without interference.
For Roman shades, the tight opening deduction for clearance is 3/8".
Some customers know this, and already take the deduction. However, we need to know if the customer has already made the deduction or expects us to take it. To be sure there is no misunderstanding, we ask for the tight opening measurement on the order form.
What is the Tip to Tip?
For roll shades, the tip to tip is the measurement after you have deducted 1/8" from the tight opening measurement to allow for clearance (1/16" on each side). It is measured from the back of one bracket (at the point at which it is mounted to the wall, window casing, or ceiling) to the back of the other bracket. The formula is:
For Rollstar shades up to and including 120": Tight Opening – 1/8" = Tip to Tip
For Rollstar shades above 120": Tight Opening – 1/4" = Tip to Tip
When do I need to indicate a measurement on the cloth width?
If your Rollstar shade is outside mount, and you want the shade cloth to be an exact width, indicate this measurement in the Cloth Width box. We will add the allowances for brackets, and for fascia or headbox if indicated in the Valance Type box, to arrive at the Tip to Tip Width.
On the Rollstar Order Form, what is the end cap? Do I always need to mark this column?
End caps finish off the fascia or headbox, covering the hardware at the ends.
Some types of fascias and headboxes have optional end caps that cover the ends of the brackets:
- The 4x4 snap-on fascia (4" fascia in our commercial program) is available with optional decorative end cap covers (also called bracket covers). If you are ordering these end cap covers, mark the End Cap columns L and R, but write “Covers” in the title box that reads “End Caps.”
- The 4040 fascia and the 4045 and 5050 headboxes have optional end caps to finish off the sides of the treatment. For inside mount, end caps are not needed; in fact, using them increases the gap between the shade and the window frame. However, they are necessary for outside mount shades, to finish off the sides of the treatment, in any scenario where the ends of the fascia or headbox are visible. If the top treatment is up against a wall or other architectural feature so that the hardware cannot be seen, end caps are not needed.
If you are ordering one of these top treatments, mark the boxes if you want left and right end caps.
What are the various finishes for Rollstar fascias and headboxes?
We offer fascias and headboxes in Mill Finish (a metallic finish with a brushed, dull look). Because it has no coating, it is easier to paint.
In addition, most fascias and headboxes are available in these colors/finishes:
- Anodized Clear (a metallic finish with a shiny, smooth look)
- Hallmark White (a basic white, abbreviated in the Retail Price List as Hm white)
- Anodized Bronze (almost black)
